Students Protest Police Shootings

Compiled From Wire Services

Protesting students burned cars and smashed shop windows Friday in downtown Harare following a march to protest police shootings of two bystanders last week.

Police fired tear gas to try to halt the unrest that erupted following the peaceful protest march by human rights organizations and students.

During the march, protesters called for the resignation of police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri, who apologized Thursday for the Nov. 3 killings of two bystanders by police chasing suspected thieves on foot.
