T-Wolves Should Make Big Waves

Changes are in store at the state high school swim meet Saturday at Idaho Falls.

Team point totals may skyrocket as a result of scoring through 16th place. In the past, nine placers scored.

Now, point totals double, including 18 points for an individual victory and 40 points for a relay win.

Lake City buoyed by junior transfer Jennifer Patten plus freshmen Brooke Sprague and Megan Taggart, is a contender.

“We don’t have a girl going down there that could not place in the top 16,” Lake City coach Carolyn MaGee said. “They’re just real dedicated kids who have really worked hard. (It’s) the same thing really in the boys. Lake City’s boys, all five can place individually.”

The Timberwolves qualified 14 for state two weeks ago at the district meet in Moscow. Sandpoint has 14 entries and Coeur d’Alene eight.

The lone returning individual champion from North Idaho is Lake City senior Chris Wood in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Timberwolves senior Kyle Sexton has swam under state records in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Coeur d’Alene’s Brad Kleinjans has split backstroke victories with Sexton.

The Boise boys and girls swept team titles last year. The Braves boys easily outdistanced runner-up Borah, 453-248. But the Boise girls nipped Coeur d’Alene, 280-276.

Junior Lindsay Taggart of Lake City was second in the 100 butterfly last year.

Sprague has gone under both state sprint records. Megan Taggart’s specialty is the backstroke and Patten, who moved from Salt Lake City, could take both distance races.

The Timberwolves will enter three girls’ relays, with shots at state records in the 200 freestyle and 200 medley.

Sandpoint is in its second year of state competition. The Bulldogs’ top entrant is freshman Ben Palmer in the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle.

All-league football

The Intermountain League coaches named their all-league team Friday.

Senior Jason Hall of St. Maries, a two-way standout at running back and linebacker, was named most valuable player. Teammate Jason Holdahl, a senior quarterback, was named offensive player of the year, while senior Matt Myers of Bonners Ferry was honored as defensive player of the year.

League champion St. Maries was named team of the year and its coach, Curt Carr, was given the coach of the year honor.

Cross country

Eight boys and girls were named to the All-North Idaho Cross Country first teams.

Tony Smith of Moscow, who captured the State A-2 individual championship, was honored as the top boys runner, while Lany Dowell of Bonners Ferry and Saskia Neher of Sandpoint were honored as the top girl runners.
