Brenda Hester Chosen As Ewu’s Teacher Of Month

Compiled By Mary Beth Donelan

Brenda Hester, a social studies and physical education teacher at Medical Lake Middle School, has been selected as Eastern Washington University’s Teacher of the Month for October.

She was nominated by her student Annie Dorshorst who said her teacher “is like a big sister to me. I can talk to her about anything.”

Hester has been teaching for three years; she also coaches the seventh grade girls softball team. She is the daughter of George and Ginger Harris, Kettle Falls, Wash.

Several Eastern Washington University freshmen have been selected as President’s Scholars this fall, chosen for their outstanding academic credentials. Each student receives a $2,000 scholarship. They are:

Kari Carlin, a 1995 graduate of Gonzaga Prep and the daughter of Catherine and Paul Carlin, Chattaroy.

Rebecca Sanker, a 1995 graduate of Cheney High School and the daughter of Linda and Joseph Sanker, Four Lakes.

Carrie Havercroft, a 1995 graduate of Mead High School and the daughter of Evelyn and Darrel Havercroft, Spokane.

Steven Pry, a 1995 graduate of Mead High School and the son of Sharon and Alvin Pry, Spokane.

Dan Basse, a 1995 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and the son of Mary Jo Basse and Robert Basse, both of Spokane.

Lacey Rae Martin, a 1995 graduate of Shadle Park High School and the daughter of Jeanne and Ray Martin, Spokane.

Anthony DeStefano, a 1995 graduate of University High School and the son of Carolyn and James DeStefano, Spokane.

Mary Higgins, past director of the Spokane Community Mental Health Center, has been awarded the Sister Peter Claver Award for her compassion and concern for those without resources or the “voice” to obtain help and services.

Her dedication to the mentally ill is legendary, said a spokesman with Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Higgins, who retired from the mental health center last year after 24 years of service, worked closely with Sister Peter Claver, who died in 1987.

Jenn Hutchison, a senior at Shadle Park High School, and Lauren Evans, a student at Rogers High School, recently attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. The 350 high school students from across the country met with key leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government and the diplomatic corps. The students participated in a Mock Congress debate and vote on current legislative issues.

Terrence Moore and Matthew Hille, Washington State University students, have received scholarships for the current academic year.

Moore, a 1992 graduate of Mead High School, has been awarded a $300 L. Stokes Scholarship. He is the son of Sue Ann and Michael Moore, Spokane, and is majoring in microbiology.

Hille, a 1992 Ritzville High School graduate, won a $500 Marianne Hawley Fessler Memorial Scholarship for his achievements in mathematics. A junior studying mathematics and computer science, he is the son of Paula Hille, Spokane, and Ken and Adalia Hille, Ritzville, Wash.
