Jazz Fourth-Quarter Rally Not Enough To Rattle Knicks

John Starks hit six 3-pointers on the way to scoring 26 points and Charles Oakley added 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the New York Knicks to a 120-110 victory against the Utah Jazz on Sunday night at Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks shot 61 percent in the first half in jumping to a 61-43 lead. New York led by as many as 24 points midway through the third quarter, then withstood a Utah rally late in the fourth quarter to win its third consecutive game.

Starks hit five 3-pointers in the first half and another midway through the third period.

Patrick Ewing had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Knicks and Anthony Mason had 16 points and nine assists.

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf had 20 points and Dikembe Mutombo had 17 points and 18 rebounds for the Nuggets, who lost despite holding the Clippers to two points in the last 7 minutes. Denver is off to its worst start since dropping its first seven games of the 1990-91 season.

Charles Barkley had 31 points and 19 rebounds but Phoenix needed 3-pointers from Michael Finley, Wesley Person and Tony Smith in a 68-second span down the stretch to beat Golden State.

Person finished with 20 points and Finley added 18 for the Suns, who trailed by 17 points midway through the third quarter and lost coach Paul Westphal to an ejection.

Barkley hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Phoenix a 95-94 lead with 5:04 left and the Suns survived a wild finish to beat Golden State at America West Arena for the first time in three years.
