Girl In Detention Delivers Own Baby

From Staff And Wire Reports

Two Mini-Cassia Juvenile Detention Center staff members got quite a surprise when they checked on a pregnant inmate: The 14-year-old girl had delivered her own 5-pound baby.

“She must not have had a very long or hard labor,” center secretary Charlotte Reedy said regarding the Saturday birth. The girl apparently did not deliver prematurely.

Reedy on Monday said the girl was from another county, but did not say which one. She also declined to say why the mother was in the lockup.

The girl had arrived at the center Thursday for a three-day detainment, which was to end Sunday, Reedy said.

The staff called for an ambulance and police assistance, and the girl and baby were taken to the Minidoka Memorial Hospital.
