Lake City Breezes Past Bears, 57-37

Forgive the Lake City girls basketball team if its play seemed a bit anemic in Tuesday night’s 57-37 non-league victory over Moscow.

The Timberwolves are battling the flu, including starting forward Lindsey Herbert.

“I was pretty happy to get through (the game),” Lake City coach Dave Stockwell said. “Before the game, Lindsey told me she didn’t know how long she could go. I told her at halftime she had to shoot.”

The Bears’ turnovers totals made Moscow coach Sally Greene a bit ill.

Moscow committed 18 of its 28 turnovers in the first half as Lake City struggled to an 18-16 lead.

“I really felt the main difference in the game is, it was our first game and their third,” Greene said. “I want to play them again is my only regret.

“Most of those turnovers we didn’t even get the ball across halfcourt.”

The Timberwolves shot just 23 percent from the field in the opening half and 17 of 54 for the game (31 percent).

Moscow, meanwhile, took just 15 shots in the first half and went 13 of 39 from the field in the game.

Guard Kristi Jacobson’s put-back gave Lake City that halftime lead.

The combination of Herbert and sophomore forward Heather Stetson pushed the margin to 11 points midway into the third quarter.

Herbert opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers off the baseline. She drove the baseline to make it 28-19 at 5:06.

Guard Katie Hatrock found Stetson in the low post for an inside basket at 3:29 and Lake City led 32-22.

Five point was as close as Moscow could get in the fourth quarter.

But two Tolzmann free throws, plus three free throws from Stetson in the closing 1:11, kept the Timberwolves unbeaten in three games.

Stetson’s 13 points and eight rebounds topped Lake City. Herbert added 11 points and six of the team’s 33 rebounds.

“I would hate to see Herbert when she’s healthy,” Greene said.

Angie Sorbel’s nine points and five rebounds led Moscow, which opens Intermountain League play Friday night at Kellogg.

Lake City travels to Boise this weekend for non-league games with the Braves and Borah.
