Book Gives Edge To Woodworkers

There’s still more than a month ‘till Christmas and woodworkers know what that means: There’s still plenty of time to make Christmas toys.

Those needing ideas and patterns should check out “Toys, Games, and Furniture: Over 30 Woodworking Projects You Can Make For Children” (Readers’ Digest, $19.95).

The hardback book includes patterns for toys ranging from a minivan to a doll’s cradle, Chinese checkers game, little red wagon and a storage box for all those toys.

Off to class: It won’t take long to create a ceramic holiday platter or a Christmas table runner if you sign up for one of the holiday workshops being offered in December by the Spokane Art School.

The first class is Dec. 4 and participants make colorful platters from 6-9 p.m. The table runner class is Dec. 5, 6:30-7:30 p.m. and Dec. 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Other classes include bead necklaces, leather pouches, a tiedyed silk scarf and personalized greeting cards. For registration information, call the Art School at 328-0900.

Kudos: Foothills Middle School in Wenatchee, Wash., won the Robert Fraser Memorial Masonry Design Award, announced this week. The school building was chosen from 16 entries built in Eastern and Central Washington and North Idaho.

The award is given by the Eastern Washington Masonry Promotion Group for excellence in design and use of masonry. Following are groups sharing the award: Peden, Petersen and Lee of Spokane, the structural engineer; Shea Construction of Spokane, the general contractor; Northwest Architectural Co. of Spokane, the architect.

High-tech crafting: Crafters can now jump on the Internet for crafts industry news, a calendar of crafts shows and lists of crafts suppliers.
