Obituaries

James Alberg Spokane

Service for James R. “Jim” Alberg, 71, will be at 2 p.m. today at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Alberg, who died Wednesday, was born in Tekoa, Wash.

He served in the Coast Guard from 1942 until 1946. He was married in 1954 and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a machinist from 1946 until he retired in 1976.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Alberg; one stepdaughter, Geraldine VanVoorhis of Hayden, Idaho; one stepson, Richard Baycroft of Deer Park; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ron Marcussen Rathdrum

Service for Ron D. Marcussen, 22, will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Senior Center in Rathdrum.

Mr. Marcussen, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, disappeared with his wife, Rita, in 1973. He was believed to be a victim of homicide.

He grew up in Rathdrum and graduated from Lakeland High School in 1969.

He served in the Army from 1969 to 1970 and married Rita Graisy in 1972.

Mr. Marcussen had worked for Boise Cascade Co., building modular homes, and also at Thayer Seed and Sod.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and riding motorcycles.

Survivors include his mother, Valma, of Rathdrum; and one sister, Linda Rice of Spokane.

Brian Henderson Spokane

Funeral Mass for Brian Michael Henderson, 49, is planned for 10 a.m. today at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Henderson, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday from lung cancer.

He was a sculptor and designed the official Bloomsday logo. He had also designed many Bloomsday T-Shirts and hand-made medals for some winners.

He graduated from Gonzaga Prep and the University of Washington, where he received a bachelor of fine arts degree in sculpture, and from Washington State University, where he received a master of fine arts degree in sculpture.

He was employed by David Evans and Associates Inc.

Mr. Henderson is survived by his wife, Candice; twin daughters, Callie Fried and Katrina Henderson, both of Spokane; his father, Robert Henderson of Spokane; four sisters, Christopher Juel of Sequim, Wash., Becky Fix and Cindy Henderson, both of Spokane, and Kathryn Liebergesell of Bremerton.

May Stratton Coeur d’Alene

Service for May E. Stratton, 92, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stratton, who was born in Freeman, died Tuesday.

She was raised and educated on the Washington side of Mica Peak. She lived and worked on the family homestead and married Earnest Stratton in 1921. She later moved to Santa, Idaho.

She lived in various small towns in North Idaho, including Worley, for 28 years. She was a cook at Worley High School for 15 years before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1965.

Mrs. Stratton enjoyed singing and playing piano and was a member of the Grace Bible Church in Coeur d’Alene. She moved to Heritage Place retirement home in 1982.

Her husband died in 1975.

Her survivors include one son, Merle Stratton of Chehalis, Wash.; one daughter, Viola Russell of Maryland; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Peter LaBeck Spokane

Visitation for Peter J. LaBeck, 81, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. LaBeck, who died Tuesday, was born in Lancaster, Pa.

He served in the Air Force for more than 20 years and retired from Fairchild Air Force Base in 1963 as a staff sergeant.

He had lived in Spokane since 1950 and married Elsie Schieche in 1953.

He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Parish and the Eagles Lodge. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 25 years and was also active with the Mid-City Senior Center.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years; five daughters, Ann and Marian LaBeck, both of Redmond, Wash., Paula Stepankowsky of Longview, Wash., Monica LaBeck of Puyallup, Wash., and Stephanie Lynch of Spokane; one sister, Lillie George of Lancaster, Pa.; and two grandchildren.

Ada Ravens Latah

Memorial service for Ada V. Ravens, 92, will be at 11 a.m. today at Latah Country Bible Church.

Mrs. Ravens, who died Nov. 10, was born near Pine City, Wash.

She graduated from Rosalia High School and Cheney Normal School.

She taught at the Goldsworthy School near Rosalia for two years and married Everett Ravens in 1927. They lived in Latah. Mr. Ravens died in 1988.

Mrs. Ravens also worked as a nurses’ aide in the infirmary at Rockwood Manor Retirement Home for 11 years. She lived in an apartment at the Good Samaritan Center in Fairfield while recovering from a hip fracture.

Survivors include one son, Wilbur Ravens of Latah; one daughter, Verda Moss of Tekoa, Wash.; two sisters, LaVina Davis of Cheney and Beulah Gibbons of Spokane; two grandsons and one great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Fireside Furniture Fund.

Montana Pooley Coeur d’Alene

Memorial graveside service for Montana “Monty Calkin” Pooley, 71, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel of Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pooley, who was born in Montana, died Monday.

She moved to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1944.

She had worked at Marie’s Cafe in Coeur d’Alene and Clare Pendar of Post Falls. She was also a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Terry Calkins of Montana; six daughters, Beth Broadsword of Spokane, Norma Turner and Roxanne Calkins, both of Kalispell, Mont., Francie Larkin of Great Falls, Mont., and Cindy Rogers and Mary Jo Jensen, both of Coeur d’Alene; three sisters, Henrietta, Babe and Chris; one brother, Joey; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gary Loesch Post Falls

Service for Gary C. Loesch, 56, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Loesch, who died Monday, was a victim of homicide.

He moved from California to Spokane in 1979 and to Post Falls in 1986.

He married Barbara Stultz in 1969.

Mr. Loesch had worked for Dilley Amusement Co., in Post Falls for 10 years and was also a route driver for The Idaho Spokesman-Review.

He was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge in Elk Grove, Calif., and the Shrine and Scottish Rite of Spokane.

Survivors include his wife and son, Charles Loesch, both at home; one daughter, Tina Loesch of Clarkston, Wash.; two brothers, Wayne of Kentucky and Randy of Post Falls; and one stepsister, Corine Lance of Seattle.

John Jolgen Spokane

Service for John N. Jolgen, 74, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Jolgen, who was born in Rose Lake, Idaho, died Wednesday.

He was a 50-year Spokane resident and retired as a conductor from Amtrak in 1986.

He was a member of the United Transportation Union, the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railroad Employees, and Eagles Lodge 2.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruth Jolgen; one daughter, Dianne Cline of Spokane; three brothers, James and Bill Jolgen, both of Kirkland, Wash., and Kenneth Jolgen; and five grandchildren.

Lydia Hutchins Spokane

Memorial Service for Lydia Hutchins, 73, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, where she was a member. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Hutchins died Nov. 7 at home from cancer.

She had lived in Spokane for nearly 40 years and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Hutchins is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bill “Hutch” Hutchins; two daughters, Eileen Pilant and Barbarann Elliott, both of Spokane; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
