St. James Brings Christian Songs

Joe Ehrbar Correspondent

Local contemporary Christian music fans have reason to be happy these days, what with three concerts playing the area in the past six weeks. Especially so because these were big names in the genre - Pray for Rain, 4HIM and Out of the Grey.

Saturday, at Grace Harvest Fellowship Auditorium, 15601 E. 24th, another great Christian show will be staged. This time, it’s rising teenage sensation Rebecca St. James.

Many critics expect the young singer to be the next Amy Grant.

At 18, St. James, who lives in Nashville, has recorded a strong, widely aired debut album and already has been nominated for a Dove Award for best new artist of the year.

Her self-titled first album is full of soaring and uplifting Christian pop melodies. All of the tunes, including the hit “Here I Am,” are sung like prayers.

St. James began her career in her native Australia at age 13 singing for a Christian rock band. What piqued her interest in Christian music was that her dad was a concert promoter in Australia and gave his daughter free tickets to Christian concerts.

A female duo, Serene and Pearl, will open Saturday’s show. xxxx REBECCA ST. JAMES Location and time: Grace Harvest Fellowship Auditorium, 15601 E. 24th, Saturday, 7 p.m. Tickets: $6 for general admission, $10 for gold seats, are available at area Christian bookstores. (Tickets are $8 at the door.) Children under age 6 are admitted free.
