This Flick Is Just ‘Two’ Darn Cute For Words

Jolson sings. Garbo talks. And, now, Mary-Kate Olsen swears.

Or maybe it was Ashley Olsen. I can’t tell ‘em apart - each is perkier and more insistently adorable than the next. Anyway, one of them says a mild swear word in “It Takes Two,” their movie debut. Ashley plays a poor little rich girl and Mary-Kate is a rich little poor girl (rich, because she has friends). Through a series of gently amusing adventures, they manage to convince their single parents, played by Steve Guttenberg and Kirstie Alley, to get married.

The movie’s a combination of “Richie Rich,” “The Prince and the Pauper” and “The Parent Trap,” with the Olsens as two, two, two Hayley Millses in one. This very familiarity will probably increase the movie’s appeal for kids who remember the spunky duo from TV’s “Full House” and who will enjoy seeing them as slightly different spunky girls in “It Takes Two.”

So, what’s in it for parents? Well, be prepared to see yet another children’s movie in which the kids are smarter than the adults. Plus, there’s a weirdly negative portrayal of the adoption process.

Beyond that, it’s an inoffensive, cheery little movie. Alley hints at edginess with her cranky/lovable sense of humor, and the Olsens have become deft little performers. One of them (Mary-Kate?) has a very funny reaction to eating escargot, twisting the words, “Good. Nice. Chewy,” into an original bit.

Some of the acting is too broad - Jane Sibbett, as Guttenberg’s money-hungry fiancee, is about as subtle as a dirigible. But it’s easy to figure out that she’s the character you’re not supposed to like and, come to think of it, that’s probably the point.
