Favre Rests, But Ready If Needed

From Wire Reports

Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Brett Favre sat out practice Friday to rest his left ankle after a rigorous workout caused some soreness.

“Any time he works on it, it’s going to be sore the next day,” coach Mike Holmgren said. “He probably did a little too much yesterday. He did some conditioning stuff (including running) I wish he wouldn’t have done.”

Favre sprained the ankle and defensive end Reggie White suffered a sprained right knee Nov. 5 at Minnesota. Both played against Chicago last Sunday, but White sat out practice this week.

“In one respect I know they can play,” Holmgren said of Sunday’s game at Cleveland. “Last week I didn’t know they could play.”

Ellard might play

Three weeks after pulling a hamstring, Henry Ellard might be recovered in time to play for the Washington Redskins against Seattle. Earlier this week, the Redskins were expecting to be without their leading receiver for the second game in a row. But after spending the bye week getting treatment from his longtime physical therapist in California, Ellard has exceeded his own expectations with the pace of his recovery.

“When I pulled a hamstring before, it was usually that fourth week before I got back in, and even then I was limited with the things I could do,” he said. “Now, it has been a blessing to be back this quick.”

Hail to the red-hot Chiefs

If the Kansas City Chiefs beats the Houston Oilers, it would be the Chiefs’ seventh straight victory, tying a club record set in 1969, when the team went on to win the Super Bowl.

“I think we have a good team with a possibility of being a great team,” running back Marcus Allen said. “We’re not going to look too far down the road.”

If they do care to take a peek, though, they’ll see Dallas on Thursday and Oakland 10 days after that.

Jones offers jet

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ private jet will be available to Larry Brown if the cornerback decides to play Sunday against the Raiders.

Brown will attend the funeral of his infant son today. Ten-week-old Christopher Brown, who weighed 1 pound at birth, died Thursday morning.

The Cowboys have been preparing rookie cornerback Alundis Brice to start in Brown’s place.

Means still sidelined

As expected, running back Natrone Means was one of the first four players to be deactivated for the Chargers game at Denver.

Means, who had been the AFC’s leading rusher for most of the season, will miss his second straight start because of a groin strain.

Means said this week he doesn’t expect to play until the Chargers play Oakland on Nov. 27.

Wilkinson trial set

Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Dan Wilkinson is to go on trial Jan. 16 on a charge that he punched his four-months-pregnant girlfriend in the stomach.

Judge Dennis Helmick set the date during a pretrial hearing in Hamilton (Ohio) County Municipal Court. Wilkinson, who was not required to attend the pretrial hearing, was not in court.

Wilkinson pleaded innocent Sept. 14 to the charge of domestic violence.

The misdemeanor charge alleges the victim was caused serious physical harm. Conviction could result in a six-month jail term and $1,000 fine.

Kay sentenced

Former Denver Broncos tight end Clarence Kay was sentenced to four months in jail.

Kay, 32, pleaded guilty in September in Denver District Court to two counts of violating a restraining order and one count of probation violation.
