Ucla Tops WSU In Volleyball

Kara Milling had 20 kills and Kim Krull added 19 as UCLA handed the Washington State University women’s volleyball team its second straight Pac-10 Conference loss 15-3, 11-15, 18-16, 15-10 Friday in Los Angeles.

The ninth-ranked Cougars are now 12-6 in Pacific-10 play, 20-6 overall while the tenth-ranked Bruins moved to 11-6 in league, 19-7 overall. With a win over Washington tonight, UCLA could move up to tie WSU for second in the Pac-10 final standings.

Sarah Silvernail had 20 kills and eight blocks to lead WSU.

In Gresham, Ore., Lori Peters had 13 kills and 22 digs as the Community Colleges of Spokane rallied to defeat Clackamas Community College 12-15, 15-4, 15-9, 15-7 in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges quarterfinals.

The Sasquatch will play Columbia Basin Community College today, with the winner advancing to the conference championship.

In Moscow, Idaho, Tzvetelina Yanchulova had 21 kills to help the University of Idaho down Boise State 15-10, 9-15, 15-2, 15-2 in the Big Sky Conference Tournament semifinals.

Idaho (26-4) aims for its fourth consecutive tournament title when it takes on Idaho State at 7:30 tonight. The winner earns an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.

Swimming

The University of Washington captured first place in all 11 events to defeat visiting Washington State 110-78 in a women’s swim meet at the Husky Pool in Seattle, Wash.

Husky swimmers set eight meet records during the competition, including Trina Tagas’ double victory. She won both the 200 butterfly (2:05.10) and 200 freestyle (1:53.30) in meet-record times.

Lorek resigns

University of Idaho women’s track and cross country coach Scott Lorek announced his resignation, effective immediately, due to personal reasons.

UI athletic director Pete Liske couldn’t be reached for comment on what will happen in the search for Lorek’s successor.

Hockey

Paul Maryshack, Trevor Aubie, Norm Kozomi, Cliff Garcia and Scott Hickey all scored as Grand Forks edged the visiting Spokane Braves 5-4.
