Ccs Gets Two Seconds And A Third

Community College of Spokane teams had to settle for two second-place finishes and a third in conference championships Saturday.

In the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges volleyball tournament at Gresham, Ore., Columbia Basin defeated defending champion Spokane 15-11, 15-9, 15-5.

The Sasquatch men’s soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Bellevue in the conference final at Bothell. The women’s soccer team defeated Skagit Valley 2-1 for third place.

Volleyball

Returning only one starter from last year’s title team, Coach Irene Matlock’s Sasquatch finished 43-14, including a 3-2 record in the tournament.

CCS beat Columbia Basin in home last weekend to complete the regular season but lost twice to the Hawks in the tournament.

“I thought we did outstanding,” Matlock said. “To take second in our conference was a great achievement. It it is tremendously difficult to win the conference title two years in a row.”

In the championship match, Matlock said the Sasquatch “played excellent defense, but they just overpowered us.”

Sophomore Sheryl Hovde and freshman Jenni Rosselli were named to the all-tournament first team. Freshman middle hitter Stephanie Short made second team.

Michelle Burge of CBC was named Most Valuable Player.

Soccer

The Sasquatch men defeated and tied Bellevue during the regular season, but two early missed shots off the crossbar hurt Spokane Saturday.

Bellevue took control with three goals to open the game, two by John Adcock. Spokane’s lone goal was scored by Kenn Crestian.

The Spokane women scored the game winner off a corner kick. Sweeper Chrissy Bailey scored on a pass from Nicole Hays.
