Steffi Graf, the top seed and heavy favorite in the WTA Tour Championship at New York, grabbed a spot in the title match of this season-ending tournament by beating Natasha Zvereva 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. Anke Huber then joined her German compatriot by blunting the power of Brenda Schultz-McCarthy 6-3, 6-3.
About the only thing that has bothered Graf this year has been the taxman. She has been questioned at least twice, and her father, Peter, currently is in jail for alleged tax evasion.
Despite her off-court problems, including a bad back and sore foot, Graf has been nearly unstoppable.
Monica Seles will play her first Fed Cup match in the final against Spain, next weekend in Valencia, Spain. Seles feels recovered enough from the tendinitis in her left knee that forced her out of the WTA Tour Championships this past week in New York.
Her trip to Spain will be the first time Seles will play in Europe since her 1993 stabbing. xxxx
