Heisman hopefuls

Eddie George, RB/Sr., Ohio St.: In No. 2 Buckeyes’ 42-3 thrashing of Indiana, the Heisman frontrunner was limited to 130 yards on 26 carries and scored twice. On the year, George has 1,722 yards and is averaging 6.1 per carry.

Peyton Manning, QB, Tennessee: In Vols’ 34-31 win over Kentucky, Manning threw a 70-yard TD pass and was 23 of 41 for 272 yards. On the season, Manning is 218 of 338 for 2,689 yards and 22 TDs.

Darnell Autry, RB, Northwestern.: In Cats’ 23-8 win over Purdue, Autry gained a career-high 226 yards on 32 carries. He’s rushed for 1,675 yards on the year, averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

Troy Davis, RB/Soph., Iowa St.: Despite Iowa State’s 45-31 loss to Missouri, the sophomore back rushed for 180 yards on 24 carries to finish with 2,010 yards. On the year, Davis is averaging 5.8 yards per carry and has 15 TDs.

He became only the fifth player in Division I-A to rush for 2,000 yards and joins Barry Sanders, Marcus Allen, Mike Rozier and Rashaan Salaam - all Heisman Trophy winners.

Danny Wuerffel, QB/Sr., Florida: In Gators’ 38-7 win over Vanderbilt, Wuerffel was 17 of 35 for 299 yards and two TDs. On season, he’s 170 of 252 for 2,547 yards and 29 TDs.

Tommie Frazier, QB/Sr., Nebraska: The No. 1 Huskers finish the regular season Friday at Norman, Okla.

Sideline salutes

Alex Van Dyke set an NCAA record for most receiving yards in a season, catching 13 passes for 314 yards as Nevada beat San Jose State 45-28. Van Dyke upped his total to 1,874 yards, surpassing the record of 1,779 set in 1965 by Howard Twilley of Tulsa.

Marcus Jones of North Carolina got his 22nd career sack in a 28-24 win over Duke to break the school’s sack record, previously held by former New York Giants star Lawrence Taylor.

A strange trip

Virginia athletic director Terry Holland said he will investigate reports that a trainer tried to trip a Virginia Tech player who scored a touchdown on the last play of the Hokies’ 36-29 win.
