Nominations Due For Ray Flaherty Scholarship

Nominations for the Inland Northwest Chapter of the National Football Foundation Ray Flaherty scholarship are due by the end of this month.

High school senior football players are eligible for $13,000 in scholarships if they fill out applications at their school and mail them to the local chapter at Box 1798, Spokane, WA 99201-1798. Each school can nominate a back and a lineman.

The local chapter selected Brian Smith of Sandpoint as its first scholarship winner last January. Smith, who won both lineman of the year and the Ray Flaherty Award, is attending the University of Missouri. Jim Salters of Gonzaga Prep, who is at Princeton, was back of the year.

The 10 finalists were honored at a black-tie dinner. This year’s winner will be named Jan. 15, 1996.

Smith was runner-up in the Western United States Scholarship Athlete Award. The regional winner receives $18,000. The Western winner was from Sacramento, Calif.

Applicants are judged on athletic ability, academic achievement, citizenship and service.

Seven local finalists will receive $1,000, the back of the year and lineman of the year will each receive $1,500 and the Ray Flaherty Award winner receives at least $3,000.

The Inland Northwest Chapter was formed last December. Anyone interested in joining should contact Paul Sorensen at (509) 924-7750.
