Judge Won’t Expand Picket Restrictions

Compiled From Wire Services

A judge denied Detroit Newspapers’ request Monday that an order restricting strike demonstrations at a suburban printing plant be expanded to all newspaper facilities.

After hearing from attorneys for striking unions and for the newspapers, Circuit Judge Raymond Cashen declined to broaden the scope of his original injunction in the 4-month-old strike.

On Sept. 13, Cashen had issued an injunction limiting to 10 the number of pickets in the main driveway leading from the newspapers’ printing plant in Sterling Heights. He also ordered demonstrators not to throw nails, glass or other sharp objects onto the driveway.
