Senators Dump Bowness

Compiled From Wire Services

Rick Bowness, the only head coach in the history of the Ottawa Senators, was fired after the team lost its eighth straight game Sunday night.

A humiliating 6-0 defeat in Buffalo left the Senators with a lifetime record of 39 wins, 178 losses and 18 ties under Bowness.

In Zurich, Switzerland, the suspension from international hockey of holdout Ottawa Senators forward Alexei Yashin was upheld by the International Ice Hockey Federation.

The IIHF also banned the Russian Central Army team from all international games - in and outside Russia - until June 30, 1996.

Wayne Gretzky was chosen NHL player of the week last week after scoring 11 points on three goals and eight assists in four games.

Former Montreal Canadiens standout Larry Robinson was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, along with Frederick Cook, Bill Torrey, Gunther Sabetzki, Jack Gatecliff and Brian McFarlane.
