South Hill Water Main Repaired

From Staff And Wire Reports

A South Hill neighborhood dried out Monday after crews repaired a broken 12-inch water main and smoothed out Grand Boulevard, which was closed briefly to traffic.

The water main burst Sunday between 16th and 17th avenues shortly after 6 p.m., flooding streets and basements. About 30 homes were left without water until 11:15 p.m., when the line was repaired.

Street crews worked overnight to fill the hole in the middle of Grand Boulevard. The road was open Monday for the morning rush-hour traffic, then was closed again about 10 a.m. for resurfacing.

City officials said the break likely was the result of heavy traffic loads on Grand Boulevard and cold weather, which causes an increase in ground pressure. , DataTimes
