Eagle Awards Earned By Two Local Scouts

Two Inland Northwest students have earned their Eagle Scout awards:

Daniel Haire, a 15-year-old junior at Medical Lake High School is a member of Troop 314 in Airway Heights. His Eagle project was to build two kiosks for the Centennial Trail at the Seven and Nine Mile trailhead locations in Riverside State Park.

Jeffrey Bognar, 13, an eighth-grade student at Cheney Middle School, is a member of Troop 314 in Airway Heights. His Eagle Project was to repair and re-shingle the roof on a picnic shelter in Airway Heights.

Four Inland Northwest residents serving in the military have earned special recognition:

Spec. Benton Payne, son of Lorraine Bowen, Spokane, was decorated with the Army Achievement Medal while serving as a military policeman at Fort Richardson, Alaska. He is a 1991 graduate of Shadle Park High School.

Second Lt. Peter Tingstrom, son of Raymond Tingstrom, Spokane, and Ellie Tingstrom, Carlsbad, Calif., received the silver wings of an Army aviator as an honor graduate of the officer rotary wing aviator course at Fort Rucker, Daleville, Ala. He is a 1994 graduate of Washington State University.

Pvt. Todd Burroughs, son of Russell and Marcia Burroughs, Spokane, has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal while serving as a fighting vehicle infantryman at Fort Benning, Ga. He is a 1994 graduate of University High School.

Lt. Col. Pam Sharafinski, daughter of Grace Thomas, Spokane, was recently promoted to her present rank. She is stationed with the Air Force Reserve as a staff nurse with the 92nd Medical Group at Fairchild Air Force Base. She is a 1974 graduate of Colville (Wash.) High School and a 1978 graduate of Eastern Washington University.

Richard Millard has been accepted as a cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., as a member of the 1999 graduating class. He is the son of Richard and Cynthia Millard, Mead, and a 1995 graduate of Mead High School.

Robert Speth, an associate professor in Washington State University’s Department of Veterinary and Comparative Anatomy, Pharmacology and Physiology, has been named a Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Speth has been at WSU since 1984.

His research deals with the renin angiotensin receptor system of the brain. In February, he will be recognized at the association’s annual meeting in Baltimore, Md.

Janet Wilder and her studio, The Academy of Dance, will represent Washington state for 1996 in Dance Excellence!, an International Festival for Young Dancers.

The annual week-long festival of technical workshops in Los Angeles will be March 25 to 31. Studios from throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and Europe have been selected to represent their areas in classes, performance and adjudication.
