Obituaries

George Brown Spokane

Visitation for George William Frederick Brown, 77, is scheduled for today from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon at Riplinger Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Brown, who died Monday, was born in San Francisco.

He had served in the Navy for 11 years.

He lived in Spokane for 15 years and previously lived in the San Francisco Bay area and operated a business in Millbrae, Calif.

He was a charter member of Legion of Honor the Spokane Club, and a member of the North Hill Masonic Lodge No. 210, Scottish Rite Bodies, the El Katif Shrine and the Wandermere Men’s Golf Club.

He was also a member of the Past Master’s Clubs of Washington and and California.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Ada; one daughter, Marcia Peterson of Spokane; one sister, Dorothy Siglin of Pollack Pines, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Helen Baxter Spokane

Memorial service for Helen P. Baxter, 74, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Baxter, a 30-year Spokane resident, died Monday.

She was born in Sheldon, Iowa, and grew up in Houston.

She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Donald Baxter; a daughter, Patti Baxter of Spokane; two sons, Kevin Baxter of Spokan, and Gary Baxter of Edmonds, Wash.; two sisters, Anne Chevrier of Akron, Ohio, and Virginia Bunch of Edmonds; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association.

Hugh Dressel Spokane

Memorial service for Hugh Arthur Dressel, 88, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mr. Dressel, a longtime Spokane attorney, died Monday.

He was born in Brookings, S.D., and moved to Sprague, Wash., as a child.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1924, and graduated from Gonzaga University and Gonzaga Law School.

He was elected prosecuting attorney of Pend Oreille County in 1934 and married Marion “Marse” Smith that year. They moved to Newport, Wash., and lived there until 1941.

He accepted a position on the attorney general’s staff and they moved to Olympia. In 1945, he was appointed supervisor of transportation for the Public Service Department and later served as the assistant director of transportation for the state until 1947.

Mr. Dressel and his family moved to Spokane in 1947 and he began a law practice with the late Edward Lehan. He entered semi-retirement in 1990 and worked out of a small office at home.

He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and Manito United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years; one son, Don Dressel of Fort Worth, Texas; one daughter, Dennie Crowe of Spokane; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Donald Duthie Spokane

Visitation for Donald Francis Duthie, 76, is scheduled Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Born in Coeur d’Alene, Mr. Duthie died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Care Center in Greenacres.

He graduated from high school in Coeur d’Alene and served in the Army Air Corps, Glider Squadron during World War II. He received a Good Conduct Medal.

He married Kathleen Kerns in 1946 in McCall, S.C., and they moved to the Spokane Valley from Coeur d’Alene in 1963.

He worked for Kaiser Aluminum in Trentwood for 35 years and retired in 1981.

He was member of Pines Baptist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1435.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Millard and Richard Duthie, both of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Max Duthie of Overland Park, Kan.; four daughters, Donalene Gross of Seattle, Marvaleen Duthie of Fairbanks, and Maria Duthie and Jacquelyn Laurich, both of Spokane; a sister, Mary Jane Mitchell of Colville, Wash.; and nine grandchildren.

Everett Jennings Post Falls

Service for Everett L. Jennings, 80, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel of Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jennings, who was born in Nebraska, died Tuesday.

He had lived in California, Nebraska, Montana and Wyoming before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1945.

He married Vena McVay in 1942.

Mr. Jennings worked building roads for the Civilian Conservation Corp. in Montana for three years and later built the store at Rockford Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

He was also a mechanic for Knudtsen Chevrolet in Coeur d’Alene for 25 years, retiring in 1972.

Mr. Jennings was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Coeur d’Alene and was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the vestry board. He was also the Sunday school superintendent and a member of the Post Falls Eagles.

Survivors include his wife, at home; four sons, Everett of Spokane, and Phillip, Kevin and Joseph, all of Post Falls; two daughters, Patricia Siegel of Rathdrum and Nancy O’Brien of Post Falls; brother, Roy of Nebraska; two sisters, Leona Beckwith of Coeur d’Alene and Lois Mullen of Alaska; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Anna Larsen Spokane

Service for Anna Larsen, 94, is planned for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Central Lutheran Church, where she was a member. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Larsen, who died Friday, was born in Jewell, Iowa.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 31 years.

Her husband of 60 years, Silas Larsen, died in 1989.

She is survived by four daughters, Lois Larsen and Anna Marie Olson, both of Spokane, Helen Brooks of Medical Lake and Phyllis Salmon of England; one son, Noel Larsen of Soldotna, Alaska; one sister, Cleo Brock of Jewell, Iowa; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Lutheran Church or Hospice of Spokane.

Richard House Post Falls

Service for Richard L. House, 48, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls.

Mr. House died Tuesday.

He had lived in the Coeur d’Alene area all of his life and was a supervisor at Coeur d’Alene Garbage Service.

He married Rita Churchill in 1976.

Mr. House enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, at home; two sons, Kelly and Terry Rada, both of Spokane; two brothers, Ronald of Bayview and Robert of Orofino, Idaho; and sister, Joan Peightal of Post Falls.

Ruth (Hunsberger) Sleeth Spokane

Memorial gathering for Ruth (Hunsberger) Sleeth, 84, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sleeth, who died Monday at home, was born in Madison, S.D., and had lived in Spokane for 80 years.

Her husband, Don Sleeth, died in October.

She graduated from Reardan (Wash.) High School and St. Luke’s School of Nursing. She had worked for Spokane Public Health Department.

Mrs. Sleeth was a member of Heritage Congregational Church and the Spokane Floral Gardens Association.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Paananen of Seattle; one son, Tim Sleeth of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Sallee Vogt and Madlyn Gold; two brothers, Paul and Wayne Hunsberger; and six grandchildren.

Irene Rose Hubbell Spokane

Memorial service for Irene Rose Hager Hubbell, 90, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hubbell died Friday.

Born in Quincy, Wash., she moved to Spokane when she was 10 and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School. She then graduated from Northwestern Business College and Kinman Business University.

She worked at Federal Intermediate Credit Bank and retired from there as secretary to the president and assistant credit analyst.

She was active in church activities at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church after she retired. She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the United Methodist Woman and the Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary.

Mrs. Hubbell is survived by two sons, Ren and Steve Hager; one sister, Lydia Toppin; and three grandchildren.

Howard Lake Spokane

Memorial service for Howard Larle Lake, 74, is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Lake died Monday.

He worked in construction in Alaska and Washington for more than 50 years and was a thoroughbred race horse trainer for more than 25 years, racing at Playfair Racecourse, Yakima Meadows and Coeur d’Alene Race Track.

He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 302 of Seattle, and the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association.

His wife, Faith Lake, died in May.

Mr. Lake is survived by one daughter, Darlene Larson of Chattaroy; one son, George Lake of Spokane; one stepson, Gary Johnson of Spokane; one stepdaughter, Cindy McKechnie of Juneau, Alaska; two brothers, Harold Lake of Spokane and Wayne Harris of Kenai, Alaska; and nine grandchildren.

Mildred Miller Spokane

Graveside service for Mildred A. Miller, 87, is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Miller, a longtime Spokane resident, died Monday.

She was born in Swan Lake, Manitoba.

She worked as a sales clerk at The Crescent department store for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Leo Miller; one son, Gary Miller, and one daughter, Jolayne Miller, both at home; two brothers, Wane and Cecil Shea, both of Minnesota; one sister, Marilyn O’Brien of Minnesota; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Bernie Jaenke Spokane

Service for Bernie D. Jaenke, 93, is planned for 3 p.m. Friday at Riverside Mausoleum Chapel at Riverside Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Russell, Idaho, Mr. Jaenke died Nov. 17.

He had lived in Spokane since 1906 and worked for White Pine Sash for 44 years.

He was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 2.

His wife, Amy Jaenke, died in 1981.

He is survived by one sister, Alda Garvin of California.

Donald Newman Spokane

Memorial service for Donald J. Newman, 13, is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Donald, who died Monday, had muscular dystrophy.

He was born in Livermore, Calif., and had lived in Spokane for 11 years.

He was a student at Garry Middle School.

Donald is survived by his parents, Chris and Chuck Newman; a sister, Martha Newman and a brother, Billy Newman, both at home; his grandparents, Joanne and Terry Mackey of Concord, Calif., Elaine Lammuth of San Pablo, Calif., and Chuck Newman of Redwood City, Calif.; his great-grandparents, Martha Mattila of Napa, Calif., Kit Welch of Redwood City, and Joseph Ormonde of Modesto, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wishing Star Foundation.

Edwin Demaray Spokane

Funeral Mass for Edwin Lewis Demaray, 91, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Demaray died Saturday.

Born in Rock Valley, Iowa, he worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for 45 years and retired in 1966.

He was a member of the Spokane Yacht Club, Telephone Pioneers of America, Knife and Fork Club, Blue Mountain Ski Club and Elks Lodge No. 228.

Mr. Demaray is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lonnie; one daughter, Mardice Demaray of Enterprise, Ore.; two sons, Ronald Demaray Sr., of Walla Walla and David Demaray of Lynnwood, Wash.; a twin brother, Frank Demaray; two sisters, Pearl Kehden and Florence Tuininga; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
