Cougars Win Opener On Trip To South Florida

Sarah Silvernail had 15 kills and nine digs Friday as Washington State (21-6) beat Northern Illinois 15-11, 15-4, 15-13 in the start of a two-game volleyball visit to Tampa, Fla.

WSU plays South Florida today.

Shannon Wyckoff added 10 kills and Stephanie Papke 37 assists for the Cougars, who are ranked 12th in the latest USA Today/AVCA coaches poll.

WSU freshman Jennifer Stinson added eight kills and three blocks. Holly Bauer led the Huskies with 12 kills.

Starter Jenny Herndon was briefly back in the WSU lineup after missing a week with tonsillitis and an ear infection, but Elis Arias is still sitting out after injuring her ankle at USC last week.

WSU was in control of the first two games but rallied from a 12-4 third-game deficit.

“It was kind of ugly, but we got the cobwebs out,” said WSU coach Cindy Fredrick said. “We’re back on track now and it was good to get a three-game win. We haven’t done that in a while.”

South Florida is (26-3).

The Cougars return home on Sunday afternoon, just after the NCAA bids are announced.

Kyle Leonard had 12 kills and Louisa Kawulok added 11 as visiting Idaho (28-4) beat Utah 15-9, 15-8, 15-9 in Salt Lake City for its 14th consecutive win.

Basketball

Hawaii 76, WSU 69

The host Rainbows (1-0) drew 32 fouls and made 26 of 37 free throws to beat the Cougars (0-1) during the opening round of the Wahine Classic at Honolulu.

Jenni Ruff had 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars, who played without one of their leading returning starters, Amy Saneholtz. The 6-foot-2 junior forward injured her right knee in practice Wednesday and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Becky Markham had 10 points and six rebounds as the Lions (1-0) rallied from nine down in the second half to beat the visiting Eagles (0-1) at Hammond.

Freshman Kelly Bartleson scored 10 points in the first half to stake EWU to a 30-25 lead. The Lions went on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 36. EWU had 20 of its 27 turnovers in the second half.

The Bulldogs dealt the Pirates their first loss with a win at Montana Tech’s Sarsfield Classic in Butte.

Jennifer Tissue led the Pirates (2-1) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Sherri Northington added 11 points and seven rebounds. The two were the lone Pirates to shoot better than 40 percent from the field.
