Snow Flurry Halts Detroit Win Streak

Associated Press

NHL

Garth Snow turned away 36 shots and Eric Lindros scored twice as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the visiting Red Wings 4-1 Friday, snapping Detroit’s seven-game winning streak.

Snow was simply fabulous in picking up the Flyers’ season-best fifth straight win, particularly on the penalty kill at the end of the second period, stopping four shots in short order. The only goal Detroit managed was an Igor Larionov deflection while continuing that power play in the third period.

“That little flurry he stopped there at the end of the second period, he just stood on his head,” remarked Flyers winger John LeClair, who had a goal as the Flyers improved to 14-6-4.

Detroit managed 15 shots in the first period and added nine more in the second, but Snow looked extremely sharp, improving to 5-2-1 and reducing his goals-against average to 1.97.

Bruins 2, Kings 1

Boston

Boston played air-tight defense and rookie goalie Scott Bailey, a former Spokane Chief, played like a veteran, leading the Bruins over Los Angeles.

The Bruins are 3-0-1 since calling up Bailey from their Providence farm club, and their pressing need for a quality goaltender has been put on the back shelf.

While the 23-year-old Bailey was stopping 18 of the Kings’ 19 shots, the much-discussed potential deal with Edmonton for goalie Curtis Joseph was becoming more and more remote.

Ciger’s first goal came early in the second as the Oilers scored four goals in less than 5 minutes to blow open a scoreless game.

After Scott Thornton and Ryan Smyth - with his first NHL goal made it 2-0, Ciger blasted a slap shot over the shoulder of Calgary goaltender Trevor Kidd, a former Spokane Chief, at 5:33 to end Kidd’s evening.
