Fiery Three-Vehicle Collision Kills 5

Compiled From Wire Services

A car, motor home and pickup truck slammed together and burst into flames on the highway, killing five people, including a newspaper editor, his wife, who was a reporter, and one of their daughters, authorities said Sunday.

Jeff Fairbanks, 46, Ann Fairbanks, 45, their 12-year-old daughter Siena and the drivers of the motor home and truck were killed Saturday when the 30-foot motor home struck the Fairbanks car head-on, the pickup truck rear-ended them, and all three vehicles burst into flames, the California Highway Patrol said.

Another Fairbanks daughter, 8-year-old Galen, was pulled to safety. She was in serious condition.

Fairbanks, editor of the Telegram-Tribune for the past four years, had been with the paper since 1978, as had Ann Fairbanks.
