Canadian Officials Weigh Clearcut Plan

Compiled From Wire Services

A provincial commission continues hearings on a proposal to allow Louisiana-Pacific Corp. of Portland to clearcut forests near a new oriented stand board plant outside Swan River, Manitoba.

Critics of the plan have sought intervention by the federal government in the review.

A mill similar to the Louisiana-Pacific mill is proposed from Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, just across the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border from the L-P mill which is virtually complete.

The total proposed clearcut in both provinces equals an area twice the size of Prince Edward Island.
