Logging Video Captures Beauty Of Region’s Forests

Lynn Gibson Correspondent

Two new gift ideas for children show the beauty and natural resources of the Pacific Northwest.

“Lenny the Lumberjack” (Can-U-Imagine Productions, $14.95) is a video produced by a Spokane couple that captures on film a day in the life of a real logger.

Adults and kids will experience the thrill of operating powerful and gigantic machinery used in the forest industry. The footage captures the beauty of our region’s forests, mountains and rivers.

Kids will also be educated on the proper management of Earth’s forests today to ensure their survival tomorrow.

This 50-minute video, which received the 1995 Telly Award for excellence, is both entertaining and educational for ages 3 and up. To order, call (800) I CAN LOG.

Another Northwest treasure is the book “O is for Orca: A Pacific Northwest Alphabet Book” (Sasquatch Books, $14.95). Children learn their ABC’s by associating each letter with animals, plants and places of the Northwest.

The stunning photographs are taken by Art Wolfe who has teamed up with awardwinning writer Andrea Helman, both from Seattle.

From the Auklet bird to the Zigzag White River, children will marvel at the prominent and picturesque land and its inhabitants.

To order, call (800) 775-0817.

Get jailed and bailed

The March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation is raising money to help babies be born healthy through a “Jail and Bail” fund-raiser Oct. 10-12 at NorthTown Mall.

Up until the event, anyone can request the “jailing” of a friend or co-worker by calling the March of Dimes at 328-1920, along with a minimum pledge of $50.

Once the volunteer “criminal” is put into the mock NorthTown jail, that person is given an hour to raise “bail” in the form of pledged contributions to the March of Dimes.
