Injury Sidelines Stackhouse

Compiled From Wire Services

The start of the Jerry Stackhouse era will be delayed a few weeks in Philadelphia.

The prize rookie from North Carolina, chosen third overall in the NBA draft, suffered a hairline fracture on his left hand that will keep him out of action for the next two to three weeks.

“He can run, jump and play basketball,” 76ers owner Harold Katz said. “We just don’t want him banging it. It delays his progress, but we think it will only delay him for three to four games.”

Kevin Garnett, the first player in more than 20 years to be drafted out of high school by an NBA team, agreed to terms with the Minnesota Timberwolves on a three-year contract. Although the team would not disclose terms, the contract is believed to be worth $5.6 million.

First-round draft pick Brent Barry signed a three-year contract with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Free-agent guard Ricky Pierce has agreed to contract terms with the Indiana Pacers.

Journeyman center Tree Rollins, 40, who came out of retirement to serve as a player-coach for the Orlando Magic two seasons ago, will hang up his jersey and retain his assistant coaching duties.
