The announcement of verdicts in the Simpson trial may have been the most-watched single event in television history, according to estimates.
An estimated nine out of 10 adults were tuned to the live reading of the verdict, said David Poltrack, executive vice president of research and planning for CBS. He estimated a cumulative audience exceeding 150 million viewers watched at least some part of verdict coverage.
If his estimate is correct, the verdict television audience was at least on par with and possibly exceeded such historic events as the funeral of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and the moon landing in 1969.
