Armed-Services Members With Area Ties Decorated

Several military personnel with Inland Northwest connections recently received military awards. They are:

Petty Officer 2nd Class Paul Woodworth, son of Betty Woodworth, Kettle Falls, and Lyle Woodworth, Evans, Wash., received a Letter of Recommendation while assigned with Strike Fighter Squadron 146, Naval Air Station, Lemoore, Calif. He is a 1983 graduate of Kettle Falls High School.

Jennifer Bridges, daughter of Wayne and Marie McLeod, Ione, Wash., was the honor graduate of her platoon and received the Navy League of the U.S. Outstanding Recruit Award at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. She is a graduate of Riverside High School.

Lt. Jon Smith, son of Ina Smith, Greenacres, received a Humanitarian Service Medal and Joint Meritorious Unit Award while assigned with the Navy with Commander, Fleet Air Mediterranean, Naples, Italy. He is a 1984 graduate of Central Valley High School.

Capt. Diane Saty Forbes, daughter of Robert Saty, Spokane, received the Army Commendation Medal while assigned in Giesen, Germany; she is now at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. She is a graduate of Eastern Washington University and Washington State University.

Chief Warrant Officer Jeffrey Hormann, son of Duane and Janet Hormann, Spokane, has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal while assigned with the Army at Fort Belvoir, Fairfax, Va.

Spc. 4th Class Paul Janicek, son of Kurt and Nancy Janicek, Spokane, was awarded the Army Achievement Medal for being named Soldier of the Month while stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky. He is a 1992 graduate of Ferris High School.

Two military personnel from the Inland Northwest have been promoted to their present ranks:

Lance Cpl. William Markwardt, son of Gary and Patricia Markwardt, Newport, Wash., is stationed at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif. He is a 1994 graduate of Newport High School.

Lance Cpl. Brian Calvin, son of Monte Calvin, Spokane, is stationed at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Cadet Mitch Martin, son of Gary Martin, Carlsbad, Calif., is serving as regimental command sergeant major, 2nd Regiment, one of the highest positions in the cadet chain-of-command at the U.S. Military Academy. He is married to Judy Martin of Spokane.

The Washington State Roadeo competition was recently held in Spokane and was sponsored by the Spokane Transit Authority for top transit-system employees in the state.

Local STA champion drivers who successfully competed in the state event were: David Losey, first place in the fixed-route bus division; Carl Hansen, sixth place in the paratransit van competition; and the team of Bob Neihenke, Ray Pogue and Steve Williams, fourth place in the maintenance division.

Losey will now compete in the International Roadeo in San Antonio. He has placed first once and second twice in previous international roadeos.
