Ferris Avenges Loss To University Thanks To Ruhl’s Monster Night

Ferris avenged one of its rare losses on Tuesday, and in the process kept hold of second place in Greater Spokane League volleyball.

Lea Ruhl had 16 kills, 17 digs and five blocks as the State AAA third-ranked Saxons (8-2) came back to top visiting University 5-15, 15-13, 13-15, 15-4, 15-9. U-Hi (6-4), which dropped to fourth place, beat Ferris in four games the first time the teams met.

Missy Blackshire added 12 kills, 17 digs and five aces, while K.C. Richards had 18 digs and 10 kills for Ferris. Devon Bakken had 14 kills and four aces, and Sally Jamison 14 digs for the Titans.

Molly Bloom’s 16 digs led firstplace Gonzaga Prep (10-0) to a 15-12, 15-4, 15-13 win over visiting Shadle Park (2-8).

Jennifer Williams had 14 kills and Story Tombari 33 assists for the Bullpups, who have set a team record for league wins. Courtney Clary had 12 digs and Emily Christensen six blocks for the Highlanders.

Ingrid Lindeblad had 29 assists, 13 digs and two aces as third-place Lewis and Clark (6-3) outlasted visiting Rogers 15-6, 15-7, 15-12.

The Pirates (1-8) led the second game 7-1 before LC strung together 9-0 and 5-0 runs. Jaclyn Castillo had two of her team-high eight kills to give Rogers a 9-8 lead in the third game. After a 12-all tie, Lindeblad, Sarah Hiss and Becki Huddle had kills for the Tigers.

Jessica Sanborn had 15 kills and 11 digs to guide Mead (4-6) to a 15-2, 15-6, 15-8 win over visiting Central Valley (1-8).

Andrea Carnahan added 14 assists for the Panthers, who needed the win to stay positioned for a top-six finish and qualify for district. Ginger Clark led the Bears with five kills and five blocks.

Amy Metcalf’s 14 kills and 13 blocks helped Frontier League leader Clarkston (6-0) to a 11-15, 15-4, 15-7, 15-10 comeback win over visiting Pullman (3-4).

Crystal Poskey added 36 assists, Christy Jacobs 11 digs, Kori Maughan 13 kills and Christy Gribble 12 points off serve for the Bantams. Molly Fisher had 12 kills and six blocks, and Loni Eastep 17 assists and 16 digs for the Greyhounds.

Kelli Haye served eight aces in visiting East Valley’s 16-14, 15-5, 15-3 win over Riverside at Chattaroy.

Angela Overdorff added five blocks and Anjie Blindauer four kills for the second-place Knights (5-1). Katie Putman had four assists and four aces, and Meredith Thompson four kills and six blocks for the Rams (0-6).

Darcy Sohns had six kills and two aces as third-place West Valley (4-2) beat visiting Cheney 15-3, 15-7, 15-13.

The Eagles led the third game 12-0 before the Blackhawks (1-5) roared back. Amy Gelhausen of WV had 12 assists. Anna Getz had seven kills and Jennifer Scott five digs for Cheney.

Girls soccer

Anita Heaton had 15 saves and Christine Manchester looped in an outside shot at the 15-minute mark as visiting EV (5-0-1) took over the Frontier lead by edging Deer Park/ Riverside 1-0 at Chattaroy.

On the goal, Manchester took a pass from Lindsey Porter. DP/R had a 15-10 edge in shots on goal, but couldn’t get past Heaton.

Katie Snow’s first-half goal salvaged WV’s 1-1 Frontier League tie with visiting Cheney (3-2-1).

The Blackhawks’ Melissa Krogh scored just 3 minutes into the match. Although the third-place Eagles (3-1-2) stopped Cheney after that, their close attempts at go-ahead goals went awry.

At Medical Lake, Jennifer Duckett’s goal less than 2 minutes into the match led the Cardinals (2-4-0) to a 1-0 win over Colville (0-5-1).

Shameem Mahmood assisted on the lone score. Both teams had solid scoring opportunities.
