Ferris Escapes Sudden Death With Win Over Central Valley

Ferris defeated host Central Valley 6-5 in a sudden-death shootout Wednesday to maintain its grip on second place in the Greater Spokane League girls soccer standings.

The Saxons’ victory sets up a potentially dramatic showdown with first-place Mead Friday at Ferris. Idle Mead has 27 points in the standings, while Ferris has 25.

Megan Cummings’ score at the 9-minute mark gave the Saxons (7 regulation wins, 2 overtime wins, 0 overtime losses and 1 regulation loss) a 1-0 lead, but Holly Hyatt proceeded to rally the Bears (4-0-2-4, 14 points) with two consecutive goals.

Mariah McConnaughey scored the game-tying goal for Ferris at the 50-minute mark, and the game went through two overtimes tied at 2.

Ida Hardin had five saves for the Saxons, while CV’s Danielle Bruegeman had seven.

At Gonzaga Prep, the Bullpups solidified their hold on third place with a 2-0 win over fifth-place University.

Marisa Jenkins scored the first goal for G-Prep (7-0-0-2, 21) on a penalty kick after teammate Danielle Marabell was tripped from behind during a breakaway at the 52-minute mark. Lisa Bradley scored the Bullpups’ other goal 7 minutes later.

Heather Beach had five saves for the Titans (5-0-1-4, 16), while Angela Harrison had three for G-Prep.

At Rogers, Tera Young’s score at the 33-minute mark gave North Central its first regulation win of the season as the Indians downed the Pirates 1-0.

Kami McGowan had two saves for North Central (1-2-0-7, 7) as Rogers (0-0-1-9, 1) took just three shots on goal.

At Hart Field, Keri Nichols recorded two goals and Jessica Fransen had two assists as host Lewis and Clark beat Shadle Park 5-0.

Tara Buckley had four saves for the Highlanders (1-0-1-8, 4), who managed only 3 shots on goal.

Anna Adolphson and Jenell Wendel split time in goal for fourth-place LC (5-1-0-4, 17).
