Indurain Prevails

Miguel Indurain of Spain won the gold medal in the 42-kilometer individual road race in the World Cycling Championships.

Jeannie Longo of France won the women’s 26-kilometer individual road race, winning in 44 minutes, 27 seconds. She beat Clara Hughes of Canada by more than 1 minute.

Indurain, five-time winner of the Tour de France, won in 55:30. Abraham Olano, also of Spain, won the silver, coming in 49 seconds behind Indurain. Uwe Perchel of Germany won the bronze in 57:33 minutes.

The races were between the towns of Paipa and Tunja, 80 miles northeast of Bogota.
