Area Lifters Carry Home Trophies

Spokane lifters came home with four top-two trophies from the Budweiser North American Powerlifting Championships last weekend in the Tri-Cities, including a first and second for the father-son duo of Mark and Jeremy Tharladsen.

Mark Tharladsen won the masters 40-49-year-old 198-pound class with a Washington state-record total of 1,283 pounds. Tharladsen, 43, also broke state records with a 473-3/4-pound squat and 507-pound dead lift. His bench press was 303. The old records for 40-44 year olds were 1,195 total, 465 squat and 460 dead lift.

Jeremy Tharladsen, 16, won the open men’s 165-pound class with a total of 936 pounds (352-1/2 squat, 170-3/4 bench and 413-1/4 dead lift).

In the bench press section of the competition, Lupe Alvarez won the masters 40-49 super heavyweight division with a lift of 341-1/2 pounds. Rand Pratt was second in the masters 40-49 242-pound division with a lift of 363-3/4.

Bowling

The Junior Bowlers Tour launched its season at North Bowl with some impressive scores.

Jeremy Allen got off a 279 game, Tom Plybon a 278 and Jason Daniels a 266 for the boys. Tarra Borden led the girls with a 264.

Top qualifier Chris Stewart pulled out a 171-165 victory over No. 2 qualifier Allen for the title.

Brian Aylesworth beat first Plybon, then Corey Thomas before losing to Allen. Aylesworth finished third, Thomas fourth and Plybon fifth.

Next JBT will be Oct. 22 at Colonial Bowl.

The final money list for the record-setting American Bowling Congress Tournament in Reno, Nev., this summer is out, and it shows eight Spokane men and three teams cashed.

Mike Hanson was the top local money winner, earning $5,100 for a third-place finish in all-events ($3,400) and fourth in singles ($1,700). Singles champion Matt Surina picked up $2,000 with his title and $1,353 for a tie for 34th in all-events.

Other cashers: Doug Faulkner, tie 12th all-events, $2,460; Bob Hanson, 19th all-events, $2,200; Terry Heffernan, 27th singles, $834; Sean Heath, 65th all-events, $738; and Randy Bergheim, tie 84th all-events, $504.

Teams: North Bowl, 58th, $631; Walt’s Pro Shop, 80th, $496; Flat Earth Society, tie 91st, $460.

Bicycling

Terry McCleod was a runaway winner in the overall points standings in the Baddlands Cycling Club’s 1995 Twilight Series with 99 points to 59 for Chris Peterschmidt. Royce Hogue had 58 for third.

In the closest division race, Dan Brown edged Hogue 37-33 for the masters title. Paul Nelson was third with 25. Sharon Hall won the women’s title with 45 points to 25 for runner-up Ann Grabowski. Beth Perkins was third with 14.

Jeremy Wavra was the junior winner with 58 to Rusty Beal’s 29. Matt Kundrat was third with 16.
