With two weeks to prepare for No. 4 Colorado, Kansas discovered not only a superb game plan but a surge of confidence.

“We knew we would win, so it wasn’t an upset,” quarterback Mark Williams said after riddling Colorado’s defense for 299 yards passing in a 40-24 victory on Saturday at Boulder, Colo. “We really didn’t think of ourselves as underdogs.”

Coach Glen Mason agreed. “It’s only an upset if you think you’re a lesser team,” he said. “I told our kids we were going to win it.”

The No. 24 Jayhawks converted two fourth-quarter turnovers into touchdowns to end a 10-game losing streak to the Buffaloes.

June Henley ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns in the Big Eight opener for the Jayhawks, who went to 5-0 for the first time since 1968. They are 1-0 in the Big Eight. Colorado fell to 1-1, 5-1.

CU’s Koy Detmer, who leads the nation in passing efficiency, played parts of both halves with a brace to support a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He left the game twice after reinjuring the knee, and is scheduled to have surgery this week, ending his season.

East

Boston College 17, Pittsburgh 0: At Boston, running back Omari Walker rushed for 120 yards and one touchdown, and Boston College’s defense forced a pair of key turnovers deep in its own territory to lead the Eagles (2-0 Big East, 2-3) to a win over the Panthers (0-2, 2-4).

Syracuse 31, Temple 14: At Syracuse, N.Y., Kyle McIntosh and Tebucky Jones each scored touchdowns playing for injured starting tailback Malcolm Thomas and the Orangemen (2-0 Big East, 4-1) shut down Temple’s offense in the second half to defeat the Owls (0-2, 0-5). Temple saw its losing streak extended to 13 games, longest in Division I-A.

Va. Tech 14, Navy 0: At Annapolis, Md., Virginia Tech (2-3) limited the Midshipmen (2-3) to 126 rushing yards and overcame four turnovers for the first shutout for the Hokies since 1989.

South

(1) Florida St. 41, Miami 17: At Tallahassee, Fla., Warrick Dunn ran for a career-high 184 yards and a touchdown and Danny Kanell threw three scoring passes as the top-ranked Seminoles shook off a sluggish start and demolished their longtime nemesis.

The Seminoles (5-0) extended their unbeaten string to 12 straight since losing 34-20 last year at Miami (1-3). It was Florida State’s largest victory margin over the Hurricanes since a 38-3 win in 1984.

(3) Florida 28, (21) LSU 10: At Baton Rouge, La., Fred Taylor ran for touchdowns on his only two carries and the Gators shook off a slow start to beat the Tigers.

Florida’s misfiring fun-and-gun offense, averaging 544 yards and 44 points a game, was held to 28 points for the second straight week, but it was enough for the Gators (4-0 SEC, 5-0) to remain the only undefeated team in the Southeastern Conference. LSU dropped to 2-1-1, 3-2-1.

N. Carolina 22, (9) Virginia 17: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Leon Johnson raced 19 yards on a key fourth-down play and scored on a 6-yard run with 6:13 left as the Tar Heels rallied to upset Virginia, ending the Cavaliers’ five-game winning streak. The Tar Heels (1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, 3-2) picked up their first victory against a Top 10 team since beating No. 8 Texas 26-10 in the 1982 Sun Bowl. The Cavs record is 4-1, 5-2.

(11) Auburn 48, Mississippi St. 20: At Auburn, Ala., Patrick Nix was 23 of 28 and Stephen Davis rushed for 162 yards as the Tigers (3-1 SEC, 4-1) unleashed a dizzying offensive display to beat the Bulldogs (0-3, 2-4).

(16) Alabama 27, N.C. State 11: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Alabama’s Brian Burgdorf threw for two touchdowns and 196 yards as the 16th-ranked Crimson Tide (1-5) beat North Carolina State (1-5), the Wolfpack’s fifth straight loss.

Georgia 19, Clemson 17: At Clemson, S.C., freshman Torin Kirtsey’s 195 yards rushing helped the Bulldogs (3-3) to a win over the Tigers (3-3) and rekindled Georgia’s running legacy in the closing game of one of its longest rivalries.

Georgia Tech 37, Duke 21: At Durham, N.C., Donnie Davis and C.J. Williams dominated Duke’s porous defense, leading the Yellow Jackets to a victory over the Blue Devils.

Williams racked up 185 yards on 35 carries and two third-quarter touchdowns. It was his best rushing performance this year for the Yellow Jackets (2-1 ACC, 3-2). Duke dropped to 0-3, 2-4.

Southern Miss. 25, Louisville 21: At Hattiesburg, Miss., quarterback Heath Graham passed for 276 yards and running back Chris Buckhalter ran for 77 as the Golden Eagles (4-2) overcame turnovers in beating the Cardinals (3-3).

Mississippi 20, Tulane 17: At Oxford, Miss., Mark Smith dove in from 1 yard with 9:47 left as the Rebels (3-2) edged the Green Wave (2-3).

Maryland 9, Wake Forest 6: At WinstonSalem, N.C., Maryland’s quarterback controversy escalated when Brian Cummings replaced Scott Milanovich and rallied the Terrapins (3-1 ACC, 5-1) to a win over the Demon Deacons (1-5, 0-3).

Midwest

(13) Kansas St. 30, Missouri 0: At Manhattan, Kan., the Wildcats (1-0 Big Eight, 5-0) posted their third straight shutout and Eric Hickson ran for two touchdowns as K-State beat Missouri (0-1, 2-3).

(14) Oklahoma 39, Iowa St. 26: At Ames, Iowa, the Sooners shut down Troy Davis, the nation’s leading rusher, and freshman Eric Moore threw a 90-yard pass for the go-ahead touchdown as the Sooners (1-1 Big Eight, 4-1) turned back the Cyclones (0-1, 2-3).

Iowa 21, Michigan St. 7: At East Lansing, Mich., Sedrick Shaw gained 250 yards and scored a touchdown as the Hawkeyes stayed undefeated after four games with a win over the Spartans (0-1-1 Big Ten, 2-2-1). Iowa is 1-0 in the Big Ten.

Indiana St. 16, SW Missouri St. 9: At Springfield, Mo., David Wright rushed for 153 yards and broke the Gateway Conference rushing record as the Sycamores (3-0, 5-1) beat the Indians (0-3, 1-5).

Minnesota 39, Purdue 38: At Minneapolis, Chris Darkins ran wild against the Boilermakers (0-1-1, 2-2-1) to set a school record in the Golden Gophers (1-0, 3-1) win. Darkins rushed for 294 yards, getting 231 and all three of his touchdowns in the second half.

Illinois 17, Indiana 10: At Bloomington, Ind., the Illini forced four turnovers and turned two of them into touchdowns on passes by Scott Weaver in a Big Ten victory over the Hoosiers. Illinois is 1-1, 3-2 while Indiana dripped to 0-2, 2-3.

N. Illinois 62, UNLV 14: At De Kalb, Ill., Charles Talley rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns as the Huskies (3-0 Big West, 3-3) manhandled the Rebels (1-1, 1-5).

Southwest

Texas Tech 14, (8) Texas A&M 7: At Lubbock, Texas, Zach Thomas’ 23-yard interception return for a touchdown with 30 seconds left carried the Red Raiders (1-1, 2-2) to a stunning victory over the Texas A&M (0-1, 2-2), ending the Aggies’ streak of 29 unbeaten games in the Southwest Conference.

(10) Tennessee 49, No. 18 Arkansas 31: At Fayetteville, Ark., Peyton Manning’s precision work in a 16-play drive carved up Arkansas and helped the Volunteers come back to beat the Razorbacks. Manning completed three third-down passes in the 77-yard drive that ended with Jay Graham’s 1-yard dive, giving the Volunteers (3-1 SEC, 5-1) a 35-24 lead in the third quarter. Arkansas dropped to 3-1, 4-2.

(20) Texas 37, Rice 13: At Austin, Ricky Williams ran for two touchdowns and James Brown threw for two as the Longhorns scored 24 unanswered points in the second half and pulled away from the Owls. Texas improved to 2-0 in the SWC, 4-1 overall. Rice dropped to 0-1, 1-3-1.

Texas Christian 31, Houston 21: At Fort Worth, Texas, Andre Davis scored four touchdowns and rushed for 166 yards in the Horned Frogs’ win over the Cougars (0-1 Southwest Conference, 0-5), who lost their 10th consecutive game dating back to last October. Davis became the first player in TCU history to have 14 career games with 100 yards or more rushing. TCU is 1-0, 4-0.

West

Air Force 56, UTEP 46: At Air Force Academy, Colo., Beau Morgan rushed for four TDs to lead the Falcons to a come-from-behind victory over the Miners in a Western Athletic Conference shootout. The victory kept Air Force in the hunt for the WAC title with a 4-1 record (4-2 overall) while UTEP dropped to 0-3 in the WAC and 1-5 overall.

New Mexico St. 48, Louisiana Tech 13: At Las Cruces, N.M., Cody Ledbetter tied a school record with five touchdown passes and became the school’s career passing yardage leader to lead the Aggies (1-0 Big West, 2-4) past the Bulldogs (2-1, 4-2).

San Diego St. 24, Utah 21: At Salt Lake City, Billy Blanton passed for 297 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Aztecs (1-1 WAC, 3-2) over the Utes (3-1, 3-3).

Colorado St. 59, Utah St. 17: At Logan, Utah, Daren Wilkinson threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Rams (3-2) rolled to a win over the winless Aggies (0-5).

Fresno St. 51, New Mexico 34: At Fresno, Calif., Reggie Brown scored four touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs (2-2 WAC, 4-2) to a win over the Lobos (0-3, 2-3).
