Shadle Girls, Chewelah Boys Top Dogs At Bullpup Invite

The seventh-ranked Shadle Park girls defended their title and the Class A sixth-ranked Chewelah boys surprised the bigger schools at Saturday’s Bullpup Invitational at Finch Arboretum.

Jaime Stone of Deer Park convincingly beat Northeast A counterpart Hayden Kristianson of Chewelah for the individual title. Stone ran the 3.1 miles in 19 minutes, 46 seconds - 26 seconds up on the field.

Shadle bunched up in the next positions, with Tiffany Steele (20:35), defending champ Sara Hall (20:36) and Amy Sawatzky (20:37). The Highlanders scored 55 points; host Gonzaga Prep (124) was third.

Chewelah’s boys dominated the field, with third-place David Yarnell (16:42) and fourth-place Asher Ernst (16:45) leading the way to 36 points.

Led by champion Jim Rucker (16:23), the host Bullpups took second with 55 points. Third-ranked University (73) settled for third, led by James Berry in eighth.

Cameron Hatch (16:36) of fourth-place Rogers was runner-up.

Football

Ryan Chicoine kicked a 47-yard field goal and quarterback George Petticrew accounted for three touchdowns as Lakeside came back to defeat visiting Colfax 23-14 in a key NEA game at Nine Mile.

Lakeside (3-0, 3-2) tied Chewelah for first place and is on track for one of the league’s two playoff spots.

Colfax (1-2, 3-2) rushed for 110 first-half yards and had a 14-10 lead. The Eagles held Colfax to 8 rushing yards after halftime and finished with five takeaways.

Chicoine made the difference, putting five kickoffs into the end zone and averaging 45 yards per punt. Petticrew ran for a pair of 1-yard TDs.

Volleyball

Lewis and Clark and University took advantage of North Central’s night off to break a tie for third place in the Greater Spokane League.

Erin Naipo had 19 kills and 17 digs as host LC (7-4) outlasted Central Valley 15-6, 14-16, 17-15, 15-7. Sarah Hiss added 17 kills, and Becki Huddle had three consecutive kills in the third game after CV served twice for the win. Crystal Lee had 21 kills and 16 digs for the Bears (1-10), and Carrie Sanders’ two kills completed a second-game comeback from 11-14.

Angel Whalen had 35 assists and four aces as U-Hi (7-4) beat visiting Rogers 15-10, 11-15, 15-9, 15-11.

Devon Bakken and Kristina McAuley added 12 kills apiece for U-Hi. Teana Scott had 15 kills and five blocks for Rogers (1-9), which won its game after trailing 10-4.

Aces in the second and fourth games carried visiting Clarkston (7-0) to a 15-4, 15-3, 12-15, 15-6 Frontier League win over Colville (3-5).

The Bantams had six consecutive aces in the second game and six aces during seven straight serving points in the clincher. Amy Metcalf had 12 kills, 13 blocks and two aces for Clarkston. The Indians’ Ann Marie Lofts had six digs and three aces.

Leah Hannan served the first six points of the match and Leah Wilde had seven of her eight kills in the clincher as Pullman (4-4) defeated visiting Riverside 15-6, 15-5, 15-3.

Carisa Montez added nine digs and eight kills for the Greyhounds. Meredith Thompson had three kills and two aces for the Rams.

Girls soccer

Dawn Salfer scored at 77 minutes and Stacey Roberts made two saves in the final 3 minutes as visiting West Valley (4-1-3) edged first-place Deer Park/Riverside 1-0 at Chattaroy in a Frontier match.

East Valley (5-0-2) and DP/R (6-2-0) have 12 points. WV and Cheney are one point back.

Salfer scored on a header after a feed from Gabrielle McClintock.

At Cheney, Shelly McGrew had three goals and an assist in the second half as the Blackhawks (5-2-1) stopped visiting Colville 5-0. Lisa Anderson added two goals and an assist for Cheney.

At Pullman, Jennifer Duckett’s shot with 2 minutes left deflected off a defender and gave Medical Lake (3-5-0) a 2-1 win over the Greyhounds (0-7-1).
