Hunters Find Remains At Site Of Crash

The remains of a pair of best friends who disappeared nearly two years ago in an ultralight airplane were found by hunters Sunday in a heavily wooded area north of Old Baldy Mountain.

Greg Berglund, 28, and his friend, Mike Flake, 29, disappeared on Nov. 13, 1993, after taking off from the Oregon City Airpark.

A massive search involving 1,500 people failed to turn up any sign of the pair before the effort was called off on Nov. 28, 1993.

Berglund and Flake had been friends since age 11 and had roomed together at Oregon State University. The pair had spent much time together on other dangerous outdoor hobbies such as scuba diving, sky diving and jet skiing before Flake learned to pilot an ultralight aircraft.

Berglund was Flake’s first passenger in the aircraft, and they had planned a flight to Mount Hood to land on a glacier.

Their families, friends and longtime girlfriends continued their own search after the official search ended, but finally gave up and assumed the men were dead.

A Clackamas County sheriff’s deputy said two hunters found the remains near the ultralight plane, which was nose down in the ground.

Deputies and Federal Aviation Administration investigators will examine the crash scene.
