Jewel Thieves Get Away With Million

Compiled From Wire Services

Thieves used a blowtorch to break into two safes at a jewelry store, snatching $1 million in gold and diamonds.

The robbery at the Dan Peligrad jewelry store in Manhattan’s Diamond District occurred early Saturday, when tens of thousands of people were flocking to Central Park to hear Pope John Paul II celebrate Mass.

The burglars broke through a 12th-floor hallway wall to gain access to the store.
