A surge of seismic activity off the shores of a hot springs resort south of Tokyo appears to be subsiding, weather officials said today.

But Japan’s Central Meteorological Agency said today that the frequency of the tremors has subsided.
Experts had warned that an undersea volcanic eruption was possible.
