Freight Train Derails In Eastern Montana Town

Associated Press

A freight train derailed as it passed through Fairview Monday afternoon, with two locomotives and four cars coming off the tracks, a Burlington Northern spokesman said.

Gus Melonas said the train came off the track in North Dakota. Fairview is on the border between Montana and North Dakota.

Melonas said none of the cars tipped over, although one locomotive was leaning slightly. No one was injured and the cause of the derailment was unknown.

Three of the derailed cars were carrying sugar and the fourth barite, which is a clay product.

Fairview residents reported the train was blocking a crossing.

BN crews were working through the night to put the cars back on the track and hoped to have the line open by this morning, Melonas said.

The train originated in Sidney.
