Idaho Boys, Girls Soccer Playoffs Begin

The chase for the North Idaho A-1 Region I boys soccer state berth begins today.

And the three teams vying for the spot do it essentially with no season playing experience. The Idaho state tournament is held in October though North Idaho boys teams play their season in the spring.

Based on winning the North Idaho Cup last spring, Sandpoint will get a bye while Lake City and Coeur d’Alene meet today at 4:30 at Hayden Meadows Elementary.

The Lake City-Coeur d’Alene winner will meet Sandpoint on Wednesday. If LC wins today, the match Wednesday will be played at Hayden Meadows at 4:30. If Coeur d’Alene wins today, the match Wednesday will be played at Sandpoint.

The girls regional tournament begins today as well.

In a pair of loser-out matches, No. 6 seed Bonners Ferry (0-9) goes to No. 3 Sandpoint (5-3-2) while No. 5 Lewiston (5-6-1) visits No. 4 Moscow (6-4-3). Both matches are at 4.

The Bonners Ferry-Sandpoint winner will play No. 1 Coeur d’Alene (9-4-3) on Thursday while the Lewiston-Moscow winner goes to No. 2 Lake City (8-3-4) the same day.

Thursday’s winners advance to the championship match, which will be played Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Moscow’s Bear Field. The champion earns a berth to state.

Youth wrestling

The Mat Pack, a youth wrestling program designed to develop the high school programs at Lake City and Coeur d’Alene, returns for youth in grades kindergarten through sixth.

LC coach Pat Whitcomb and CdA coach Pat Corbett will coach the youth along with NIC wrestlers and NIC coach John Owen.

Practices will begin Oct. 16 and will be held thereafter on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-6:30 p.m.
