Post Falls’ Umthun To Play Basketball At Boise State

Post Falls High School basketball standout Heidi Umthun has verbally committed to attend Boise State University, her father confirmed Thursday.

A 5-foot-8 senior and all-Inland Empire League first team selection last year, Umthun plans to sign during the early signing period next month.

Umthun will join another former Post Falls High standout at BSU, 5-9 senior Michelle Schultz, who led the Big Sky Conference in scoring last year at 19.9 points per game and was named a Kodak All-American.

A three-sport athlete, Umthun is currently a top player on the Trojan volleyball team and is a standout jumper on the track team.

Vandal booster buses

Two Idaho Vandal booster buses are available to Saturday’s homecoming football game against Eastern Washington in the Kibbie Dome.

One leaves Steve’s Sports Dugout in Post Falls at 8 a.m., the other departs from Cavanaugh’s Fourth Avenue in Spokane at 8:30 a.m. Game time is 3:05.

Cost is $25 per person for the ride, game ticket, lunch and snacks. For season ticket holders, cost is $15. The buses will also be running for the Montana game on Oct. 21 and Boise State on Nov. 19.

Vandal Booster luncheons will be held each Wednesday at Finnerty’s Red Lion in Spokane. UI coaches will be on hand for the noon meetings.

EWU runner honored

Eastern Washington’s Nick Rogers is this week’s Big Sky Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week.

The sophomore from Snoqualmie, Wash., led his team to a seventh-place finish at the Sun Dodger Invitational in Seattle. He finished in 20th place and posted a time of 25:54 over the 8-kilometer course.

A field of more than 160 runners will take part in the Eastern Washington University Invitational Cross Country Meet Saturday morning at Finch Arboretum.

The 3-mile women’s race begins at 10 a.m. and includes a field of 84 runners representing 12 colleges and universities. The men follow at 11 a.m. with 83 runners from eight schools running a 4.5-mile course.
