Newborn Found Beside Interstate

Associated Press

Two women on their way to work Friday found a naked infant, believed to be less than an hour old, on the side of an interstate.

“The baby was face down with his head in the hole, but his legs were kicking and that’s what the ladies noticed,” said sheriff’s Lt. Charlie Sharman.

The women brought the infant boy to a hospital in nearby Macclenny, a rural north Florida town of about 4,000. The baby later was transferred to a hospital in Jacksonville, where he was in good condition late Friday.

The only visible injuries on the infant were an abrasion to the knee and some skin irritation. The infant had no clothing or blanket.

Investigators were seeking help to identify the baby’s mother. The child is now in state custody.

“I think they probably had the baby in the car and just found the closest exit and got rid of it,” Sharman said. “But that’s just a guess.”
