Fien Throws 1st Td Pass; Ucla Wins

Associated Press

Pac-10

Tommy Bennett returned a fumble for a touchdown and Ryan Fien came off the bench to throw the first scoring pass of his college career Saturday as UCLA held off Arizona, 17-10, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

Bennett’s TD at 6:12 of the first quarter was the only scoring until UCLA’s Greg Andrasick kicked a 47-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth period.

Andrasick, a junior, was successful on the first field goal attempt of his career.

Fien threw a 14-yard scoring pass to Karim Abdul-Jabbar with 7:52 remaining to cap a 70-yard, 12-play drive. Abdul-Jabbar reversed his field twice and broke at least three tackles before scoring to give UCLA enough points to win.

Arizona got its points on a 42-yard field goal by Jon Prasuhn with 5:15 left and a 17-yard pass from Brady Batten to Cary Taylor just 1:03 later.

Prasuhn’s field goal was set up by Derrick Stewart’s recovery of a fumble by Abdul-Jabbar at UCLA’s 19, and the Wildcats moved 68 yards in just three plays for the TD.

Arizona got the ball back with 2 minutes left and moved from its 31 to the UCLA 36, but Batten’s fourth-down pass was intercepted by Paul Guidry at the Bruins 5 with 13 seconds to play.

While the defenses dominated, they were helped by the inept offenses of both teams for most of the game. There were 21 punts in the game, 11 by Arizona.

Bennett scooped up a fumble by Gary Taylor and ran untouched into the end zone for his touchdown. The fumble was forced by George Kase.
