Pacific Lutheran Maintains Dominance Over Whitworth

Brian Van Valey carried 17 times for 139 yards to lead Pacific Lutheran to a 37-7 Columbia Football Association-Mt. Hood League victory over Whitworth on Saturday in Puyallup, Wash.

The Lutes (1-0, 3-2) ground out 281 yards on 56 rushing plays and finished with 417 yards on 75 total plays, more than doubling the offensive output of Whitworth (0-1, 1-4).

The Pirates managed 203 yards on 52 plays.

After Whitworth’s season-opening 21-17 road win against Eastern Oregon, the Pirates have dropped four straight. For the second time this season, Whitworth was held to just one touchdown.

For the year, the Pirates have been outscored 151-60.

Offensively, the Pirates threw for just 164 with quarterback J.J. Green being intercepted three times. On the ground, the Pirates ran the ball 34 times for 39 yards.

Pacific Lutheran took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on Corey Bray’s 1-yard touchdown run, and the Lutes put the game away with a 17-point second quarter.

Whitworth hasn’t beaten PLU since 1965 - a span of 26 games.

Jon Brunaugh ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns and Western Washington had a school-record 561 yards in total offense as the Vikings defeated Southern Oregon in a Columbia Football Association-Mount Rainier League game at Bellingham, Wash.

The Vikings, ranked No. 2 in NAIA Division II poll, are 5-0.

Willamette 40, (8) Linfield 6

Sophomore Danny Osborne rushed the ball 25 times for 208 yards and three touchdowns to lead visiting Willamette to the upset over Linfield. Linfield, ranked No. 8 in NAIA Division II, fell to 0-1 in league, 3-2. Willamette is 1-0, 3-2.
