Sandpoint Girls Get Soccer Berth

Third-seeded Sandpoint completed its week of surprises Saturday as Elisa Scherb scored the only goal in an A-1 Region I girls soccer championship win over Coeur d’Alene at Moscow.

Sandpoint (10-3-2) clinched a berth to the state championship.

On a free kick, Scherb deflected the ball just over the head of Vikings goalkeeper Racheal Stormogipson.

In the second half CdA (10-5-3) outshot Sandpoint 7-1, including Teah Beckman’s attempt that hit the post.

Also at Moscow, Lake City (10-4-4) took third place when Kristi Jacobson dashed around a fullback and scored with 2 minutes left during a 2-1 win over Moscow (7-6-3).

Outshot 16-4 in the first half, the Timberwolves scored with a minute left, courtesy of Ali Chisholm. Moscow, which hit the crossbar three times in the first half, finally broke through at 56 minutes on Sarah Meyer’s pass to Erica Mays.

Volleyball

Lewiston captured second place in the Inland Empire League by defeating visiting CdA 6-15, 15-11, 15-10.

Both teams entered the IEL season-ender at 4-3. Lewiston is 14-8 overall, CdA 17-19.

The Bengals’ prize for the win is another home match against CdA. The two meet Tuesday in the A-1 Region I Tournament, a double-elimination event.

In another IEL finale, LC (3-5, 14-10) beat visiting Post Falls 15-8, 15-9 at CdA.

LC and the Trojans (0-8, 5-18) meet again Monday in CdA in a loser-out, district opener. The winner advances to a road match against defending state champion Sandpoint.

Moscow defeated host Bonners Ferry 12-15, 15-11, 18-16 to increase the possibility of a four-way tie for third place in the Intermountain League.

The Bears completed their league season at 4-6, 7-11. BF, also finished with league, is 4-6, 9-13. If Lakeland (3-6) beats Kellogg (4-5) on Tuesday, a four-way tie occurs and a coin flip determines placement.

If Kellogg wins, it will tie for second with Priest River (5-5) and force a coin flip for a first-round bye to district.

The A-1 District I-II Tournament begins Thursday, with No. 6 at No. 3 and No. 5 at No. 4 in loser-out matches.

Eanna Aaron had 10 kills, Jessica Vanard seven kills and five blocks, and Sarah Smith four kills and three aces in BF’s losing cause.

At Rathdrum, St. Maries (9-1, 20-4) completed its 16th consecutive league championship series with a 7-15, 15-11, 15-11 win over Lakeland (8-11 overall).

Amanda Tams had 11 kills and eight blocks, and Bridgette O’Dwyer nine kills and seven blocks for the Lumberjacks, who have a first-round bye at district.

For the Hawks, Jenni Borg had eight kills and seven digs, while Amber Jamison had seven blocks and served four aces during a first-game win.

The St. George’s boys and Melissa Harvill of St. George’s were big winners in Washington’s unofficial State B meet at Big Ben Golf Course in Wilbur.

Led by second-place Christian Laugen, the defending state champ, St. George’s scored 27 points. Pomeroy was second with 46, while defending state champ Northwest Christian took third with 49.

Dusty Lopez of Trout Lake won the race, completing the 3.1 miles in 16 minutes, 36.5 seconds. Laugen ran 17:16.7 and third-place Paul Barr of Pomeroy ran 17:20.6.

Laugen led the first mile, ran even with Lopez for the second, then dropped back.

Harvill, second at state last year, ran ahead all the way and finished in 21:07.4. Runner-up Flora Pearson of Trout Lake ran 21:34.5, while Jessica Warren (21:41.5), in third place, led Pomeroy to the team title with 27 points.

Host Wilbur-Creston finished second with 37 points, led by sixth-place Jess Bean (22:08.5). Defending state champ St. George’s was third with 49 points.

W-C coach Jim Cox organized the event because the official State B meet was dropped after four years. Class B runners will compete with Class A runners at district and state this year.
