Big Bucks On The Bogs
Kathy and David Aase have sweet visions of cranberries dancing through their heads.
It’s harvest time in the cranberry bogs of the Long Beach Peninsula and near-record harvests of cranberries are coming off the wet bogs of the peninsula.
Of the 28 cranberry farms that make up a $3 million industry on the peninsula, 25 grow for Ocean Spray on a cooperative basis. The farmers agree to sell only to Ocean Spray.
With everyone working for the same name, there isn’t much in the way of competition in these open marshes. Some growers even help each other out once they’re done with their own bogs.
