Vandal Repeats Big Sky Award Off Eagle Game

From Staff And Wire Reports

For the second straight year following a win over Eastern Washington, Idaho’s Montrell Williams has earned the Big Sky Conference’s special teams player of the week award.

Williams returned one kickoff for a touchdown and another long return set up a TD in the Vandals’ 37-10 win Saturday. Last year, he also returned a kick for a score against the Eagles.

“I had a dream (Friday night) I was going to do it again,” Williams said. “Deja vu.”

Montana quarterback Dave Dickenson won offensive honors for the second straight week. Dickenson, who will lead the Grizzlies against Idaho on Saturday in the Kibbie Dome, passed for 364 yards and engineered a late drive that fueled a 24-21 win over Northern Arizona.

Boise State sophomore cornerback Jason Payne intercepted three passes in a 40-14 victory over Weber State to claim defensive honors.

Husky honored

Washington running back Rashaan Shehee, who ran for 196 yards and three TDs in a 38-28 win over Stanford, is the Pacific-10 Conference offensive player of the week.

UCLA defensive tackle George Kase, whose 11 tackles aided a 17-10 win over Arizona, took defensive plaudits. USC’s Larry Parker, whose 63-yard punt return helped subdue Washington State 26-14, won special teams honors.

Grizzlies slip

Let’s see. Montana went on the road, beat 13th-ranked Northern Arizona 24-21 - and dropped from fifth to sixth in The Sports Network I-AA poll.

Logic, anyone?

The Grizzlies (6-1) flip-flopped with Troy State (7-0), which bombed Charleston Southern 66-13. McNeese State (6-0) remains No. 1.

NAU (5-2) dropped to No. 21, Idaho State (5-1) is No. 22 and Montana State (5-2) entered the rankings at No. 23.

Injury update

Idaho and Eastern Washington reported no major injuries from Saturday’s game.

Idaho tight end Andy Gilroy (partially collapsed lung) is expected to play against Montana on Saturday. He missed the EWU game. Montana reported no serious injuries.

EWU, which entertains Northern Arizona, hopes defensive lineman Ed Harris (ankle) and tight end Scott Johnson (collarbone) return in the next two weeks.

Eagles’ wide receiver Jerrold Jackson (concussion) is expected to miss his second consecutive game.
