Local Labor Leader Wins National Post

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Spokane labor leader has been elected to the executive board of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen.

Mike Carlander, 46, was elected to one of three executive vice president positions at the union’s 130th anniversary convention held earlier this month in Chicago.

The three executive vice presidents, along with the union’s president and secretary-treasurer, make up the executive board, which is the union’s primary policymaking body.

The Bricklayers union represents 90,850 men and women in the United States and Canada. Union officials say it is the oldest independent international union in North America.

Carlander, who is a fourth-generation union bricklayer, lives in Chattaroy. He was formerly business manager of the union’s Spokane local, and vice president of its Washington-Oregon State Conference. He has most recently been serving as director of the union’s Northwestern region, which includes the Pacific Northwest and parts of western Canada.
