Waldorf’s Lead Shrinks

Duffy Waldorf bogeyed two of the last five holes and watched his comfortable lead deteriorate as he shot a 1-under-par 71 for a three-day total of 203 to hold a one-stroke edge after three rounds of the Texas Open golf tournament in San Antonio.

Jay Don Blake started the round two strokes back and shot a 70 to remain right behind Waldorf. Justin Leonard started five strokes off the lead and he ended up three strokes back after shooting a 69.

Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett shot a 76 to fall 13 strokes off the pace.

Larry Gilbert shot a 6-under-par 65 for a 132 and held a three-stroke lead over Dave Stockton and Jim Colbert after two rounds of the $800,000 Ralphs Senior PGA Classic in Los Angeles.

Ben Crenshaw gave the Americans their only victory as Canada dropped the United States to the bottom of their group with a 2-1 win at the Dunhill Cup in St. Andrews, Scotland.

In today’s semifinals, Spain meets Zimbabwe and Ireland faces Scotland, with the final later in the day.

Bob Irving of Carefree, Ariz., shot a 2-under-par 70 to win the PGA Senior Club Professional Championship at Ibis Golf & Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.

In El Paso, Texas, two-time U.S. Amateur champion Tiger Woods birdied the first playoff hole to beat Fredrik Soderstrom in the Savane College All-America Golf Classic.
