Armed Man Robs Lawmakers’ Wives

Compiled From Wire Services

The wives of a current and former senator were robbed at gunpoint Saturday night on a District of Columbia street, officials said.

Teresa Heinz, wife of John Kerry, D-Mass., and Wren Wirth, wife of former Sen. Tim Wirth, D-Colo., were leaving a theater at about 10:45 when a man walked up to them and demanded their purses, Michael Meehan, a spokesman for Kerry, said Sunday.

The assailant fled when a man yelled at him from across the street and a car stopped to see whether the women were in danger, Meehan said. Neither woman was injured.
